This is a sequel to my battles with the odors of my home. I initially described my experiences at my hostel room. This time, I’m sharing the part shared by the family home.

This part of my life, this big big little part, is called Life
at my home, life with family. There are no qualms of 20 different people
visiting here but those who do visit matter and matter immensely. So, same
story different place, you have to take care of those odors . Thankfully, you
have family here and the experience of mothers scores over all the ‘jugaad’
that you yourself can come up with. And so the battles begin—
There are things that you have to take care of when someone is
visiting and more so when they will come inside beyond the drawing room.
Firstly, the rack for shoes is, pretty thoughtfully, kept at the side entrance so
we could get rid of our shoes/slippers there only and not ruin all the hardwork
that has been put into the cleaning. So when we expect a guest like that, we
have to get rid of those. ‘We’ here is overstated because its generally me
while others just boss me around here. Also, I need to get rid of the clothes
stash that has been piled up into one of the middle rooms. They would end up at
the corner of the last room and would stay there until the guests leave and you
come back to sort them.
Now, the delicious paneer, egg curry and paranthas that we are
cooking might appear scrumptious and all on the dining table but what goes into
the preparation is a lot of masala whiff which not all can bear. To fight with
that, the exhaust fan comes to the rescue. Also, to fight with some odors that
may come out of the kitchen courtesy of the rotten tomatoes or eggs can be
nullified with a baking soda solution which, as the routine goes, is the mainstay
for all housewives and so is true for my other.
So, the rooms are cleaned, the washroom cleansed and everything
is prepared just right for the people of the hour. Only one thing remains. Welcoming
them with a dulcet felicity of fragrances that they immediately feel at home
(if their home is also so tidied up) at your place. With the adept skills of my
sister, this part is taken care of by Ambi pur and her favorite lavender
vanilla. So when the guests are finally there, you can welcome them proudly and
pretty much boast about how maintained you keep your home just like those ‘decent
boys’ tell you so at hostel.
